About Ignatius van der Stock
Flemish painter and etcher
Brussels ?, circa 1635 – after 1665, ?
Landscape painter, especially of the Soignes forest and its lakes, SE of Brussels.
Pupil of Lodewijk (Louis) de Vadder (Brussels 1605-1655 Brussels) in Brussels in 1653.
Free master in the Guild of Saint Luke in Brussels in 1660.
He had himself several pupils, amongst whom Adriaen Frans Boudewyns (Brussels 1644 – 1719 Brussels) in 1665, is the best known painter.
Pieter Bout (Brussels 1640/45 – 1719 Brussels) regularly painted the figures in van der Stock’s and in Boudewyns’ landscapes.
Van der Stock was strongly influenced by Jacques d’Arthois (Brussels 1613 – 1686 Brussels) and by Lodewijk de Vadder.
His paintings are sometimes mistaken for those of Lucas Achtschellinck or for those of Alexandre van Herssen (whom only one signed work of is known).
Characteristic is his warm palette and his sensual vision of nature.
