About Jan Meerhout

Dutch painter
Gorinchem (Gorkum) circa 1627 – 1677 Amsterdam

He is sometimes called Johan Meerhoud.

Landscape painter.
Active the largest part of his life in his native Gorinchem, where he is documented until the end of the 1660s. He married here in 1650.
Then in a short lapse of time he worked in Utrecht, Heusden and Dordrecht.
During the last years of his life, from circa 1670 until his death in 1677 Meerhout lived in Amsterdam.

Stylistically he stands close to Aert van der Neer, thematically to Jan van Goyen.
Typical of Jan Meerhout is his rendering of grass and reed in parallel, almost vertical lines.
He often signed his paintings.

About our painting

Jan Meerhout painted views of Gorinchem and of nearby villages.
Our painting must represent the idyllic village of Schelluinen.

Why should you buy this painting?

Because the execution of this beautiful little landscape reminds through its free brush strokes of the Pre-Impressionist school of Barbizon two hundred years later.
