Dutch painter and draughtsman

Amsterdam 1630/31 (baptised January 2nd 1631) – 1677 Amsterdam

 

Sometimes his last name is spelt van Borssum.

He is said to have studied under Rembrandt circa 1645 – 1650.

 

Van Borssom was a versatile painter and draughtsman. 

His landscapes were influenced by different important 17th century Dutch artists, such as Jacob van Ruisdael, Jan Wijnants, Philips Koninck,  Paulus Potter, Adriaen van de Velde and Nicolaes Berchem. 

His moonlit river landscapes have often been attributed to Aert van der Neer.

Van Borssom also painted a single nature piece inspired by Otto Marseus van Schrieck (Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum).

 

He lived and worked his whole life in Amsterdam.

He is known to have travelled along the Rhine to Kleef between 1650 and 1655.
