The man bending over and pointing at the cushion on an empty chair in the right foreground is our Adriaen van Nieulandt who lived next to Lieutenant Hoeffijser in St Anthonisbreestraat. Van Neulandt’s gesture refers to the position that had opened up, as van Beuningen, whom he is looking at, had been promoted to the rank of colonel.
