About Gillis van Tilborgh II

Flemish painter
Brussels (?) circa 1625 – circa 1678 Brussels

Sometimes his first name is spelt ‘Aegidius’.

Painter of genre scenes (both low life and more elegant, noble companies) and of portraits.
He also painted a few biblical scenes and gallery pictures.

Pupil of his father, Gillis the elder (1578 – 1632), and probably also of David Teniers II (1610 – 1690).

From 1654 onwards member of the Painter’s Guild of Saint Luke in Brussels. In 1666 he was elected Dean of that Guild.
In 1666 van Tilborgh became keeper of the picture collection of the governor of the Spanish Netherlands (Flanders) and of the castle of Tervuren (South of Brussels).

Around 1670/71 he travelled to England.

His genre scenes were influenced by David Teniers II (Antwerp 1610 – 1690 Brussels), by Joos van Craesbeeck (Neerlinter 1605/06 – 1660/61 Brussels), and through both of them by Adriaen Brouwer (Oudenaarde circa 1605/06 – 1638 Antwerp). Van Tilborgh was also influenced by David Ryckaert III (Antwerp 1612 – 1661 Antwerp).
His portraits were influenced by Gonzales Coques (Antwerp 1614/18 – 1684 Antwerp?).

His dated paintings fall between 1650 and 1671.
