In short

Here you have an a-typical, fully signed exterior scene by Cornelis Dusart, who was a pupil and close assistant of Adriaen van Ostade in Haarlem.

About Cornelis Dusart

Dutch painter
Haarlem 1660 – 1704 Haarlem

Painter, draughtsman and printmaker (of etchings and mezzotints) of peasant genre and tavern scenes.
Pupil since 1675 and assistant of Adriaen van Ostade (1610 - 1685). Dusart’s works are similar in style and subject to those of his mentor.

Son of Jan Dusart, organist of Saint Bavo’s church in Haarlem.
Cornelis suffered from poor health from his childhood; he remained single all his life.

Member of the local Painter’s Guild in Haarlem since January 1679.
Between 1685 and 1695 Dusart lived alternately in Haarlem and in nearby Amsterdam. He never joined the Painter’s Guild of Amsterdam, nor did he register as a citizen.

Dusart was strongly influenced by Adriaen van Ostade, especially by his late works, that were strongly coloured.
After his master’s death Dusart acquired the contents of his studio, includ¬ing a substantial stock of partly unfinished paintings, drawings and prints. Another major source of creative inspiration was Jan Steen’s genre painting with its moralistic and satirical undertones.

Dusart’s art collection, holding Dutch and Italian paintings, was auctioned in 1708; it held a lot of works by van Ostade. Dusart had completed some of the unfinished works by his former master.

About our painting

I agree that this may not be a 100 % typical painting by Dusart, but it is fully signed with his signature which, under UV light, does not seem to have been tampered with.

Why should you buy this painting?

Because it is such a typical Dutch peasant scene.
