In short

According to the expert Fred Meijer our portrayed lady might have been of foreign origin, as her quadruple string of pearls and her bonnet do not seem Dutch. He also sees an unclear link with Isaack Luttichuys, a Dutch painter born in London, active in Amsterdam, who mostly portrayed German or German-linked patrons. In short, something of an international mystery.

About Isaack Luttichuys

Dutch painter
London 1616 – 1673 Amsterdam

Portrait painter.
Master unknown.

Son of a Dutch merchant born in Munster, in Westphalia, Germany and a Dutch mother from Goes. The couple married in Amsterdam in 1601 and left for London (where they were known under their anglicised name Littlehouse) before 1604. They had at least ten children who were all born in London.

Isaack’s brother Simon (1610 – 1661) was a still life painter.
In fact, Isaack, the portrait painter, is known to have painted some still lifes, while his brother Simon, is known to have painted some portraits.

According to Bernd Ebert, author of the extensive monograph about both brothers (2009) Isaack probably studied painting in Amsterdam (or possibly in Haarlem) during the 1630s. Isaack remained active during his complete career in Amsterdam.

Isaack’s “Amsterdam” patrons for his portraits seem to have often been interconnected through their comprehension of the German language.

About our portrait

Fred Meijer (18/08/25) was unable to give an attribution for this painting.
It reminds him vaguely of Isaack Luttichuys. The string of four pearls and her cap could indicate that this lady was of foreign origin.

Why should you buy this painting?

Because this richly attired woman remains something of a mystery.
Since the painting has been cleaned her lace radiates much more now.
