Formerly sold by Robert Noortman, Maastricht, 2001 as by Simon Kick
I would like to thank Fred Meijer who has graciously thrown the towel, 18/08/25: according to the expert our unidentified painter was active during the middle of the 17th century in Amsterdam. He further states it is not Simon Kick, nor Jacob Duck, nor the young Jacob van Loo. In the year 2000 Meijer had registered our pair at the RKD as “possibly after Gerbrand van den Eeckhout”, but now he no longer supports this attribution.
About Simon Kick
Dutch painter
Delft 1603 – 1652 Amsterdam
His first name is sometimes spelt Symon.
There are not that many paintings known by Simon Kick: he painted mostly guards room scenes, but also gallant companies and a single portrait.
Although born in Delft (as the youngest of 15 children) he moved already before 1624 to Amsterdam to learn to paint.
He was a good friend of Willem Duyster (who was also a painter of guards room scenes). Both married September 5th 1631 a sister of the other. Duyster died in 1635 at the age of 36 or 37 of the plague.
Willem Duyster actually held his name from the house that his parents bought in 1620; it was named “De Duystere Werelt”, “the dark world”. Kick and his wife first lived in the Bresteeg, but later moved in with the Duysters in “De Duystere Wereltthus sharing for some time the same house.
Simon’s eldest son, Cornelis (1631/34 – 1681), who is best known for his still ife paintings, has been his pupil.
Typical of Simon are his simple compositions with elegant, distingusihed figures. His palette is usually sobre, except for the clothing of richly dressed people.
Why should you buy this pair of paintings?
Because this is such a refined and elegant pair of interior scenes; such a shame that we have not yet a name for its painter. Of ourse the price is therefore very attractive.
